Project Planning Basics

It may be possible, but is never advisable, for a relatively simple project to get by without first rate project planning and scheduling. However, it is a virtual certainty that weak scheduling efforts on a complex project will eat away at profits and quality throughout the life of the project. More simply stated, you cannot perform effective Project Management without effective project planning and scheduling.
Five Project Planning Objectives
So, what makes project planning and scheduling effective? I would argue that effective project planning and scheduling has five objectives, which includes:
1. Meeting Corporate Goals and Objectives
2. Meeting Project and Owner Goals and Objectives
3. Anticipating the Necessary Approval Processes and Long Lead Project Needs
4. Maintaining Flexibility
5. Facilitating Team Collaboration and Sequencing

1. Meeting Corporate Goals
Top-level business milestones are the baseline for success in any firm. Aligning project goals with those corporate goals promotes consistency of purpose, supports the corporate goals, and, when achieved, meets the needs of major stakeholders throughout the firm. Intending to satisfy top-level business milestones, such as profitability goals and quality standards, ensures that the work needed to achieve those milestones is addressed throughout the project, including the oversight and coordination responsibilities.
2. Meeting Project and Owner Goals
The planning process must align with the project and the owner goals. Every project should have a mission statement that is shared with, either in written or verbal format, the entire project team, including the owner. Each step along the way should be a reinforcement of the project mission statement and goals in one way or another. Deliverables, key stakeholder review meetings, and other external commitments should include some reminder as to what the goals of the project are. We must keep these commitments in the forefront during the planning and scheduling process and ensure the work required to achieve success on each goal/deliverable/etc. is in the plan.
